Mr. Bean is a British sitcom created and written by Rowan Atkinson, who also starred as the eponymous character. The programme has aired since 1984, winning numerous awards and nominations over the years. Mr. Bean typically performs nonsensical stunts such as driving a car with his knees or trying to fly with heavy objects attached to him, which often leads to mayhem and chaotic situations for those around him. Atkinson's Mr. Bean character has attracted attention for being a "minimalist" comic who performs simple tasks poorly or incompletely. The character is one of the most famous in British television. In the British Comedy Guide, Atkinson was listed as sixth among the top ten best-loved comedians of all time, and his comic portrayal of Mr. Bean was listed as the second funniest personality in a poll to find Britain's favourite personality. In December 2008, Atkinson said that he was "sad" that Mr Bean had become a "posh comic", complaining that his attempts to make it more popular had led to Mr Bean appearing "too middle class". The character of Mr. Bean was created by writer Rowan Atkinson in 1984 while he was trying to write something for his comic strip "Not the Nine O'Clock News". He decided to use the same idea and wrote a script for a short comedy sketch (later titled "Mr. Bean"), and sent it to various production companies and broadcasters, but no one was interested, so he decided to produce it himself, and Mr. Bean was originally called "Mr. Clutter" or "Mr. Fowl". Mr. Bean's name was changed at the suggestion of the BBC, who felt it was more suitable and "less confusing" than Mr. Clutter or Mr. Fowl. A team led by Atkinson and Shaun Pye created all of the series' cartoons with additional sketches by writers such as Paula Lane, Peter Sallis and Robin Driscoll. Atkinson is credited as executive producer on every episode as well as writing most if not all of the scripts (except for some early episodes where he was uncredited). The original idea behind Mr. Bean was to create a silent comedy character. Atkinson has said that he has portrayed Mr. Bean as having "nobody inside". Eventually, it was decided that this would be deemed impossible on television (especially on pre-watershed slots), and he would instead act like an adult, although Bean did not speak until "The Trouble with Mr. Bean". Mr. Bean rarely speaks in his first two television series; the only words spoken are listed below. His voice is mostly heard in the third series episode "Tee Off, Mr. Bean" where he says three spoken lines ("That's my ball!" / "My ball!" / "Ball!"). cfa1e77820
